Hey, thanks for pointing me toward your rant. I was super pissed about the proposition passing too and I totally felt like people had been tricked too. There really were way more crazy Prop. 8 supporters than I’d expected though. In California. In 2008. What they didn’t expect though was that we’re not going to stop fighting. One day we’ll look back on this and wonder (as many of us already have been wondering for years) why laws like this can be passed.

Oh Jen,
Hearing you talk about this issue gives me hope that there are still good people in the world. I think I was just as angry as you when Prop 8 got passed (and I live here in Australia!) – but I’m glad that you saved ur rage for the podcast instead of doing what I wanted to do myself, and hurt people.

Well, if you ever get tired of America, you’re more than welcome in Australia (which unfortunately, has its own problems, but we won’t worry about that now) – awesome job!

Dave has a really good point there. If the wording was different maybe it would have passed.

(Although CNN still hasn’t called it, so there’s still a miniscule sliver of hope.)

I was really watching California and like you was very disappointed with these results. I see states like California and Massachussetts as states that can open the door for the rest of the nation. My sister and the woman she lives with in Austin and their 3 year old daughter would benefit from the rights marriage would give them. Being able to be on the same insurance, or even the right to visit someone in the hospital if the other partner ever became ill or had an accident. At least your state had it on the ballot. It’s disappointing what they did with it, but I don’t see it happening in Red-State Texas anytime soon. I voted for Barack Obama, but even he was against gay marriage. I think America is still Puritanical in some ways and there are truly awful people who hate in the name of Christianity. I’m thinking of the truly abhorrant signs in Kansas from that “religious” organization with signs saying “God Hates Fags” or the sickening murder of Mathew Shephard in Wyoming. It is all very disappointing.

I guess the biggest problem with the acceptance of gay marriage in the US is the word marriage, it carries way too much weight for most religious people. So in a way I can understand why there’s so much resistance. If gays would start calling their “coming out” a bar mitzvah most jews would probably go “OY!”

Here in the Netherlands we also have something called civil partnership, in fact that’s what my girlfriend and I have cause we both don’t believe in marriage. But gays can also get married if they want, based on article one of the Dutch constitution: “All persons in the Netherlands shall be treated equally in equal circumstances. Discrimination on the grounds of religion, belief, political opinion, race or sex or on any other grounds whatsoever shall not be permitted.”

I’ve heard/read other people talk about Prop 8 in the media and here you are in SLO somewhere in your house and you have explained it the best to me.

Good to hear you firing up! It made for an educational and entertaining podcast.

Had to laugh though at Captain Obvious making a visit Inside My Head (well ok, your head! Get it? LOL) when you stated that you and Shawno are married and you are female and Shawno is male. O R L Y? Who would have thought?

Looking forward to hearing from you and Shawno on Echo and Erk Pod.

I just finished recording my ‘prop 8 rant’ for posting later today. I wasn’t quite as angry as you though. Damaging cars is never a solution…

Gay ‘marriage’ is legal here in the UK. We call it civil partnership but it’s basically the same thing. Come on over the water’s lovely.

You’ll probably appreciate this blog post, which I read in full on the show.
